South Africa’s Constitutional Court is set to hear ex-president Jacob Zuma’s appeal against his imprisonment for contempt.
Mr Zuma, 79, was sentenced to 15 months in jail for repeatedly failing to appear before a commission investigating corruption during his tenure as president.
State-owned SABC quoted legal analyst Ulrich Roux as saying that Mr Zuma’s appeal was unlikely to succeed.
“The Constitutional Court has never before set aside or rescinded its own orders and to be honest I don’t think it’s going to happen here as well,” Mr Roux said.
Mr Zuma’s imprisonment has sparked protests in KwaZulu-Natal – his home province – and Gauteng, with police making dozens of arrests.
