Dozens of villagers were killed in an overnight raid in Beni in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The militants were armed with knives and machetes and Reuters news agency quotes a local official putting the death toll at 22.
Several other people are reported to have been kidnapped during the raid.
Kisima chief is reported to have been a victim in the attack, according to a local official cited by Anadolu news agency.
Residents are blaming the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan militia active in eastern DR Congo since the 1990s.
More than 1,200 people have been killed in Beni since November 2019, according to the Kivu Security Tracker.
